Zalau city, capital of the Salaj County, is situated in the central area of the county, in the hydrographic basin of the Zalau River, at the meeting point with the depression with the same name and the Meses Crest. With a total area of 90, 09 km2, the administrative territory of the city also includes Stana, settling situated South-East of Meses, in the hydrographic basin of Agrij.

The hilly relief of the depression has an altitude between 200 - 500 m. In the Zalau Depression, we meet a submontaneous temperate climate, with a lot of precipitations and temperature oscillations less significant than in the Transylvania Plateau.

This is why the city surroundings are rich in broad-leaved forests, creating an ecosystem favorable to the development of tourism.

The average temperature of January is - 2,5°C, and that of July is + 19,3°C.
